Recently, Xinjiang Oilfield's carbon capture project in the 2.64-million-kilowatt new energy & coal power generation and carbon capture integrated project (Phase I) was kicked off in Karamay, Xinjiang. This marks the fact that CNPC's largest-scale carbon capture demonstration project has entered the full-scale construction phase, which is of great significance in promoting the green and low-carbon transformation of the energy industry, boosting local economic and social development, and facilitating the integration of "oil, gas, coal, electricity and new energies" businesses.
This project incorporates the world-leading chemical absorption process, with the carbon dioxide captured to be used for enhanced oil recovery (CCUS-EOR), which will help Xinjiang Oilfield improve its production and efficiency and realize a closed-loop chain of carbon capture, utilization and storage. It will also be deeply integrated with the under-construction coal-fired power project: by using new energy-generated electricity to drive the carbon capture equipment, it can significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired units, creating a new paradigm for the clean utilization of fossil energy.
Upon completion of the project, the annual carbon captured will bring enormous benefits to Xinjiang Oilfield in production increase and resource recycling. This replicable "Xinjiang Model" of low-carbon technology will contribute to the green development of the industry.
