CNPC in Mongolia

CNPC purchased Mongolia's oil and gas assets in 2005, while also providing oilfield services in the country.

On April 1, 2005, CNPC purchased a 94.4% stake in three petroleum blocks-19, 21 and 22-from SOCO International PLC (UK). Located in the Tamsag Basin, Dornod Province, Mongolia, these blocks covers an area of 25,000 square kilometers. In November 2006, a commercial oil flow was obtained from preliminary prospecting well Ta19-34 at Block 19, with a daily output of 30 cubic meters. In 2011, we signed a MOU with Mongolian Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy to expand our downstream operations in Mongolia.

Since 2002, CNPC provides oilfield services in Mongolia, including geophysical prospecting, well drilling, logging and formation testing. We have undertaken 3D seismic data acquisition project for DATAM. In 2008, we won 3D seismic acquisition contracts from Mongolia's Petro Matad Ltd.


August 21, 2014 CNPC and the Petroleum Authority of Mongolia signed an MOU on strengthening cooperation in the petroleum sector between the two sides.

Nov. 1, 2013 XinXinjiang Petroleum Engineering Construction Co., Ltd. of China Petroleum Engineering Co., Ltd. was awarded the “Medal for Cooperation and Development” by the Ministry of Construction and Urban Development of Mongolia.

Aug. 24, 2011 CNPC and Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy of Mongolia signed an MOU for expanding petroleum cooperation. According to the MOU, the two sides agreed to set up a steering committee to coordinate significant matters occurring in cooperation.
