Poverty Alleviation
Poverty Relief in Xinjiang
Since 2002, CNPC has taken part in poverty-relief programs in six counties in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, spending over 50 million RMB on 63 projects in road and bridge construction, power supply infrastructure construction, dam construction, rural development and education. These projects have brought drinking water to over 20,000 people and over 200,000 cattle, and improved housing for over 20,000 farmers and herdsmen. With the help of CNPC, the local economy has witnessed a rapid development, with GDP growth of 54% and an average income growth of 33% in the six counties. A total of 4,247 families and 27,880 people have come out of poverty.
Water Cellar Donations
Low rainfall and high evaporation in the Loess Plateau in western China mean that it is always very dry and there is a serious lack of water. Drinking water for people and livestock almost completely relies on rain. Therefore, water cellars have become the most common, convenient and economical tool for collecting water to relieve the water shortage. A 36-cubic-meter water cellar can satisfy the water demand of a five-person family, and two such cellars can help a family grow 6.7 hectares of cash crops and help them develop. The "Love for Land, Water Cellar for Mothers" Program, initiated by All-China Women's Foundation and aimed at improving women's lives in rural areas of western China, advocates donations for the construction of water cellars to help people in this area.
In 2006, CNPC took part in this program and organized activities among all of its employees. As a result, 10.3 million RMB was collected from all levels of employees. These donations could help construct over 10,000 water cellars and relieve water shortages for over 10,000 families in western China.
Support for Tibet
Shuanghu in the Tibet Autonomous Region is the highest county in the world, with an average elevation of 5,000 meters. It boasts stunning scenery and rare wild animals, but its extreme climate and location make life difficult there.
Since 2002, CNPC has been assisting Shuanghu, working with the local government and people to give them a better life.
By the end of 2006, CNPC had spent 93.91 million RMB on 22 projects, including an office building for the Shuanghu government, Puri Gangri Hotel, solar power stations, roads, kindergartens, schools, old people's homes, staff centers, hospitals, rural development and Brightness Projects.
In 2007, we completed seven transportation, education, housing, and solar power generation projects in Shuanghu. These projects improved the living conditions of the local farmers and herdsmen. In the past five years, we completed 50 transportation, energy, education and healthcare projects, benefiting 80% of the local farmers and herdsmen.
