Jan. 05   CNPC donates US$500,000 and 5 million Thai baht to the Indonesian and Thai governments to support their disaster-relief activities after the Indian Ocean tsunami.

Jan. 06   CNPC employees donate 12.57 million yuan to tsunami-hit countries via China's Red Cross Society.

Feb. 16
   The largest onshore natural gas field in East China, the Qingshen Gas Field, was discovered in the northern Songliao Basin with a burial depth of 4000m and gas reserves of 100 billion cubic meters.

March

Mar. 02   CNPC starts the development of the largest condensate gas field in China, the Tarim Dina Gas Field. The gas field will become one of the major sources of supply for the West-East Gas Pipeline with an annual output of 5.1 billion cubic meters.

April

Apr. 01   CNPC purchases three blocks in the Tamtsag Basin in Mongolia from SOCO International PLC (UK).

Apr. 08   CNPC Lanzhou Petrochemical Company launches the renovation and expansion of its 600kt per annum ethylene project.

Apr. 09   The Jilake condensate gas field, another gas field along the West-East Gas Pipeline, goes into production. The designed annual output will amount to 650 million cubic meters.

May 10   CNPC and Sonatrach sign an agreement for the construction of the Skikda Condensate Oil Refinery in Algeria.

   CNPC and BOCOG signed an agreement declaring CNPC an official supplier of oil products and natural gas for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Jun. 09   CNPC and Oman Oil Company (OOC) sign a Memorandum of Understanding on investment and cooperation in oil and gas development and downstream projects.

Jun. 14   China Huanqiu Contracting and Engineering Corporation was completely merged into CNPC.

Jun. 20   CNPC's Yangkou LNG project in Rudong, Jiangsu Province, gets the go-ahead from the local government.

Jul. 01   CNPC and Australia's Baraka company sign an agreement to jointly prospect and develop the No.20 oil & gas field along the coast of Mauritania.

Jul. 13   The CNPC-Shell joint project on the development of the Changbei contract block is formally launched.

Jul. 16   The An 5 key exploration well on the southern edge of the Junggar Basin acquires high oil and gas flows, with a daily gas output of 3,200 cubic meters. This is the first time that commercial oil and gas flows are encountered in the Anjihai structure in this area, and has enlarged the exploration region in the south of the basin.

Jul. 29   CNPC signs a Framework Agreement of Cooperation with Hebei Province and Beijing Municipality on the construction of the Tangshan LNG project.

Aug. 08 
 The key exploration well on the west of the No.1 slope belt in the central uplift of the Tarim Basin acquires high oil and gas flows. This trailblazing slope-belt exploration proves that the Ordovician reef beach strata contains oil.

Aug. 10   CNPC discovers a large-scale natural gas field in Guang'an, Sichuan Province, with a reserve in excess of 100 billion cubic meters.

Aug. 19   CNPC reaches an agreement with PetroChina, one of its subsidiaries, to reshuffle their overseas assets.

Aug. 22   CNPC lays the foundation of the 10-million-ton oil refinery and the 1.2-million-ton ethylene project at Dushanzi Petrochemical Company in Xinjiang.

Aug. 30   CNPC, Petronas, Nigerian Express, Sudapet and the Hi-tech Group sign a production sharing contract with the Sudanese government to explore and develop oil and gas in Sudan's Block 15.

September

Sept. 13   CNPC wins the bidding for the oil and gas assets in Ecuador belonging to Canadian company Encana.

Sept. 15   PetroChina issued 3.97 billion more H shares.

October

Oct. 01   A significant discovery is made in well Zhanghai 15, the key exploration well on the Zhangdong Structure in the southern area of the Dagang Field. Preliminary interpretation of the logging data shows a 66.2m thick oil layer. This is the third well acquiring high oil and gas flows in the Zhangdong Structure and is an important breakthrough in lithologic oil and gas exploration in the tidal and beach area of southern Dagang.

Oct. 05   The natural gas pipeline linking Zhanazhol Oilfield in Aktobe, Kazakhstan, with the KC 13 Processing Plant is completed. This pipeline not only resolves the problems of air pollution posed by the flaring-off of associated gas from the oilfield, but also enables residents living along the pipeline to use clean fuel.

Oct. 27   CNPC bought 100% of the stock of PetroKazakhstan.

Oct. 31   CNPC spends 6.15 billion yuan to buy back A-shares, H-shares and American Depository Receipts of the Liaohe Oilfield Company, Jinzhou Petrochemical Company and Jilin Petrochemical Company.

November

Nov. 04   The Chinese and Russian premiers sign a joint communique giving the support of their two governments to CNPC and Transneft in carrying out a study on the design and construction of the Sino-Russian crude oil pipeline.

Nov. 13   An explosion of aniline equipment at the dianiline plant of Jilin Petrochemical Company, one of CNPC's subsidiaries, causes casualties and environmental pollution. CNPC adopts effective measures to control and minimize the impact of the accident.

December

Dec. 02   Construction begins at the Yingmaili gas field cluster, China's largest condensate gas field.

Dec. 07   CNPC and the Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC) sign a contract for the offshore risk exploration of Libya's Block 17-4.

Dec. 15   The first-stage of the Sino-Kazakh Crude Pipeline became operational.

Dec. 16   Oil and gas output in the Tarim Oilfield reaches over 10 million metric tons, making it CNPC's fifth-largest oilfield.

Dec. 20   CNPC and Indian Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) jointly purchase PetroCanada's 38% share of the Syrian Al-Furat Petroleum Company (AFPC).

Dec. 22   CNPC and Gazprom sign a contract for a feasibility study looking at underground gas storage at the Ren 11 reservoir in Huabei Oilfield. Gazprom will provide the investigative services to examine the feasibility of the project..

Dec. 30   The 886km-long Ji-Ning trunk pipeline of the West-East Gas Pipeline was formally linked up. The pipeline is designed for dual direction gas transmission and will allow adjustments between the West-East Gas Pipeline and the Parallel Shaan-Jing Pipeline.
