In 2007, CNPC significantly increased its workload in geophysical prospecting, well drilling, well logging, mud logging and downhole operations, with vastly improved efficiency and quality.

Geophysical Prospecting

In 2007, CNPC deployed 124 seismic crews (63 2D and 61 3D crews), 7 VSP crews, and 19 non-seismic crews in the domestic market, while 55 seismic crews were put into operation overseas in 26 countries including Sudan, Venezuela, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Algeria.

In China, seismic data obtained included 45,740 kilometers of 2D lines and 23,940 square kilometers of 3D profiles, 0.6% and 64.7% more than in 2006. Seismic data obtained overseas included 55,661 kilometers of 2D lines and 27,852 square kilometers of 3D profiles, 22.9% and 9.3% more than in 2006.

Well Drilling

A total of 870 drilling rigs in domestic operation drilled 12,952 wells, creating footage of 23.18 million meters in 2007. The geosteering system, which was developed independently by CNPC, has been applied in Jidong Oilfield and Sichuan Gas Field, tapping the high-end drilling technical service market. With the maturing application of horizontal drilling techniques, 806 horizontal wells were completed. Among these, 417 wells were drilled using the LWD geosteering technique, accounting for 52.9% of the total. The oil formation encountering rate of horizontal drilling reached 84.6% on average, 2.4% higher than in 2006.

We deployed 174 drilling rigs and provided drilling services in 27 countries, such as Sudan, Kazakhstan, Venezuela, Indonesia and Pakistan. These rigs completed 1,290 wells, with a drill footage of 2.49 million meters.

Well Logging

By the end of 2007, we had 710 professional logging crews, including 188 imaging logging crews and 75 high-precision logging crews. There were 203 logging crews working in 22 overseas markets including Sudan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Indonesia.

In addition to consolidating and extending our existing overseas markets, we also made progress in developing new markets and high-end customers in Chad, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Libya and Iran.

CNPC made a new breakthrough in the field of comprehensive study and service. In 2006, we bid for and won geological block research projects for the first time, including the low-resistivity formation research project of Block 1/2/4 (Neem Oilfield) in Sudan. In 2007, our findings in low-resistance strata added more than 2 million metric tons of oil in place to Neem Oilfield.
