Science and Culture
Science and culture are the driving forces of human development and social progress. CNPC actively supports scientific and cultural development and has sponsored China's scientific expeditions to the South Pole and the exhibition of folktale paintings by children from six member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
Sponsorship of Polar Expedition

In December 2004, CNPC sponsored the conquest of Dome A in the South Pole by the 21st Chinese South Pole Exploration Team through PetroChina Lubricant Company. CNPC offered the team RMB 15 million and covered the expenses for all of the oil used by its vehicles.

The Kunlun Exploration Team spent 63 days covering 3,078 kilometers. When they arrived at the Dome A area, they got data about the highest spot as well as the average temperature in the area.

In the exploration, two Kunlun Lubricant products, CI-4/SL 0W/30 and CI-4/SL 5W/5,did an impressive job. Powered by CI-4/SL 0W/30, the exploration vehicles ran smoothly at a temperature of minus 48 degrees, with four getting to Dome A.

"Fairytales Painted by Children"

On May 29, 2005, "Fairytales Painted by Children", an exhibition of children's artwork from members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, was sponsored by CNPC and held at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing.

The exhibition displayed wonderful works by about 2,000 children from the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization-China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan-to mark International Children's Day in the "Fairytale Year of 2005", 200 years after the birth of Hans Christian Andersen.
