| | | Cainan Oilfield's Protection of Przewalski's Horses | | The Cainan oilfield, located in the eastern Junggar Basin, is China's first million-ton uncompartmentalized desert oilfield. Since becoming operational in the 1990s, equal importance has been attached to oilfield development and environmental protection. The oilfield ensures clean operations by minimizing drilling mud disposal and oil seepage. The original landforms of the area are also preserved through such measures as planting grass and sand fixation covering an area of three million square meters. This has helped to green the desert area and create a habitat for wildlife such as wild horses, Mongolian gazelles and foxes.
Given the close proximity of the Kalamaili Ungulate Nature Reserve, Cainan oilfield employees strive to promote environmental awareness and share information about wildlife protection with local residents. The company also protects local fauna, such as Przewalski's Horses, which inhabit the area. On occasion, small groups of these wild horses accidentally stray into the well site. To protect these animals from harm, the workers provided a water source by building a pool. This move was praised by the Forestry Administration of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the Xinjiang Przewalski's Horse Reproduction Research Center.
There are only about 1,300 Przewalski's Horses in the world at present, and Kalamaili Mountain, which is located at the center of the Kalamaili Ungulate Nature Reserve, is an important habitat for them. In 1986, the Chinese Ministry of Forestry brought 18 Przewalski's Horses from the United Kingdom, Germany and other countries to the Junggar Basin in Xinjiang. To restore these horses to the wild, the Xinjiang Przewalski's Horse Reproduction Research Center launched a rehabilitation program for these horses recently. Thanks to its efforts, there is now a stable population of Przewalski's Horses in the area. | | | | | |
