In December 2002, CNPC started operating an EOR project in Syria's Gbeibe Oilfield after winning a tender. In March 2003, CNPC signed a development and production contract on Gbeibe Oilfield with the Syrian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and the Syrian Petroleum Corporation (SPC).
Gbeibe Oilfield has been exploited for nearly 30 years, leading to extremely complex oil-gas-water contacts. Since CNPC's takeover of the field, new 3D seismic data acquisition and studies on geology and reservoirs have been conducted. Favorable results have been achieved by adopting large-scale acid fracturing and drilling multilateral horizontal wells to produce from low permeability reservoirs.
In 2006, CNPC drilled 10 horizontal wells at Gbeibe, including three bilateral ones, and nine were put into production. Initial daily output from each new well averages 100 cubic meters.
In 2008, a new breakthrough was made in progressive exploration in the western part of the Gbeibe Oilfield. Four oil-rich zones were discovered in the northern, eastern, and western parts of the field. Most notably, we obtained high-yield oil flows from the Chilou Formation.
Al-Furat Project
On December 20, 2005, CNPC and Indian Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) jointly purchased PetroCanada's 38% share in Syria's Al-Furat Petroleum Company (AFPC).
The contract block covers an area of 2,027 square kilometers, including 39 oil and gas fields, 3 crude oil processing plants, one natural gas processing plant and oil and gas pipelines. In 2010, we concluded an agreement with Shell to acquire shares in Al Furat Petroleum Company. Under the agreement, we acquired a 35% interest in Syria Shell Petroleum Development (SSPD), which had been 100% owned by Shell. SSPD has 31.25% equity in three production licenses — Deir-Ez-Zor, Fourth Annex and Ash Sham. |
