CNPC's significant and intensified research helped to construct the Second West-East Gas Pipeline, which is renowned for its cutting-edge application of high-strength, high-pressure and large-diameter pipes, and has enhanced scientific and technological innovation in petroleum pipe manufacturing and pipeline construction.
Seven new products in four categories with CNPC's independent intellectual property rights have been developed and manufactured domestically on an industrial scale. These include large-diameter high-steel-grade pipe materials and pipe products: X80 φ1219×18.4mm spiral submerged arc welded pipes, X80 φ1219×22mm longitudinal, submerged arc welded pipes, X80 φ1219×22mm, 25.7mm, and 32mm hot bending bends, and DN1200×DN1200×DN1000 (46mm and 52mm) hot-drawn T-joint pipe fittings. The new X80 steel welding wire and flux have increased the welding speed up to 1.7m/min, 30% higher than the speed in the First West-East Gas Pipeline, at a welding qualified rate as high as 98.89%. The technical standards of pipe materials, fittings and construction have been studied and developed, including 16 standards for steel plates, steel pipes, bends, fittings and large deformation steel pipes and 17 engineering and construction technical standards. These have provided a scientific basis for steel pipe ordering, pipeline design, steel pipe production, and the construction of the Second West-East Gas Pipeline project.
Breakthroughs were witnessed in six research projects, including the CYW-1422 vertical hydraulic pipe bender and strain-based pipeline design method. Welders on the Second West-East Gas Pipeline received valuable guidance from more than 100 techniques obtained from these projects in the automatic welding, semi-automatic welding, joint-connecting welding and rework welding of X80 steel pipes. Additionally, significant progresses have also been made in 16 aspects such as breaking control, anti-corrosion field coating, locating of gas storage, integrity management technologies, and safety pre-warning technologies, which will benefit the construction and safe operation of the pipeline.
