Breakthroughs in the development of SBR and HTPB technologies

HTPB (hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene) was successfully used in the escape system of China's Shenzhou-7 manned spacecraft. Its safety is comparable to or even better than similar foreign products and was honored by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), demonstrating the world leadership of CNPC's HTPB products.

CNPC has built a state-of-the-art, systematic, and sophisticated E-SBR (Emulsion Styrene Butadiene Rubber) technology package by developing, integrating and optimizing the existing E-SBR technologies of Jilin Petrochemical Company and Lanzhou Petrochemical Company, as no relevant technology can be transferred from abroad. The package focuses on quick, high-conversion E-SBR technology, and is based on the initiator system of "PMHP–EDTA–FeNa–sodium sulfoxylate formaldehyde ". With the varied feeding method for polymerization, emulsifiers, conditioners and water are fed in batches and on a pot-by-pot basis to improve latex stability, enhance conversion rate, minimize recovery throughput of butadiene and styrene, and to save energy and reduce waste discharge. The coagulation process is optimized to use salt-free and dual-pot methods, ensuring stable product quality and facilitating the stable and long-term operation of follow-up processes. In addition, new wastewater treatment techniques for SBR unit developed by Lanzhou Petrochemical is employed, which can reduce wastewater COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) to 100mg ~ 200mg/kg after primary treatment.

By using this technology package, a 50kt/a and a 100kt/a E-SBR unit have been built at Jilin Petrochemical and Lanzhou Petrochemical respectively. Both units output products with the leading performance indicators in China and both satisfy the REACH Act by the European Union. This practical package is ready to be applied to construct the 200kt/a SBR unit at Fushun Petrochemical.
